Get Your Copy Now

Limited Quantities! Pushing hard to compete with Fender and be seen as hip, in 1958, Gibson gave its Les Paul a fancy maple top and also introduced the Flying V and Explorer. The tide also affected its  jazz boxes; the rounded cutaway that bespoke traditionalism was superseded by the daring, fabulous florentine cut. Only $9.97 […]

Waterloo WL-14

Modern Johnson

Waterloo WL-14 Price: $2,100, $1,890 (street) Contact: www.collingsguitars.com or www.waterlooguitars.com Robert Johnson slid into a photo booth, dangling a cigarette from his lips and holding a flat-top guitar. What brand was he smoking? Who knows? But scholars think he was holding a Gibson-made Kalamazoo KG-14. And acoustic blues guitarists want to know what Mr. Johnson […]

Mario Guitars Serpentine

Custom Flagship

Given that Mario Martin credits his guitar-building education to a stint at the Fender Custom Shop, it’s no surprise that his Serpentine is a working player’s instrument: comfortable, light, and versatile, with quality workmanship and an inviting neck. It also explains why he’s inspired by Fender body shapes of old, like the Duo-Sonic. Imagine the […]

EHX J Mascis Ram’s Head Big Muff Pi

Always On

When Electro-Harmonix heard that guitarist J Mascis’ prized Deluxe Big Muff Pi was stolen years ago, they decided to make things right. The Big Muff is crucial to the sounds he has long created in Dinosaur Jr, so a collaboration was inevitable. The J Mascis Ram’s Head Big Muff Pi is a fuzz/distortion/sustainer pedal based […]

A pioneer of jazz-rock, Coryell was noted for being comfortable in almost every style. Dubbed “the Godfather of Fusion” after introducing a new feel to […]

Vintage Visionary

The First Golden Age of Ibanez 1973-1982

Thirty-Five years ago, Ibanez was a scrappy upstart guitar company that dared to challenge the big boys at Gibson and Fender. Today, is a dominant force in the guitar universe. • Ibanez was – and still is – a brand of Hoshino, a Japanese company with a U.S. headquarters in Philadelphia. In the mid ’70s, […]

Tom Keifer

Thick and Thin

Tom Keifer is a tad young to be on the (very) long list of musicians inspired first and foremost by the Beatles’ “arrival” in the U.S. in 1964. But he’s not too young to inspired by a TV show inspired by the Fab Four. Keifer’s earliest musical memories were born as he plopped in front […]

Billy Flynn

True Chicago Blues

The phrase “electric blues” is a catch-all for many genres, but for aficionados it refers to a highly specific idiom from the Windy City. In fact, if you listen to Billy Flynn’s smokin’ new album, Lonesome Highway, you will identify it instantly, as his tone and sweet licks capture the nuance of Chicago’s best guitarmen. […]

His credentials are voluminous and accomplishments staggering, and he hasn’t stopped. He has recorded at least 108 albums as a band leader and is today, at age 82, […]

Nioma Guitars

Rarities from a West Coast Music School

NIOMA musical instruments from the 1930s and ’40s – with their vaguely Hawaiian-looking name – have mystified vintage-guitar enthusiasts over the decades when they’ve occasionally surfaced in retail shops and guitar shows. The seven known models – three acoustic guitars, two dobro-like resophonics, and two electric lap steels – were oriented to those who made […]

Harley Benton Double Vision

Mod Duo

In this era of combination pedals, it makes sense to house similar effects together, as in the Harley Benton Double Vision. A dual-modulation box, it offers chorus and tremolo in one chassis. Visually split via the lightning-bolt graphic, the left side is chorus, right is tremolo, and each has a dedicated footswitch. Operation couldn’t be […]

Christone “Kingfish” Ingram

Evolution

Christone “Kingfish” Ingram’s latest album shows the 22-year-old blues prodigy flourishing with maturity and tone for days. Titled 662, the digits reflect the area code of his North Mississippi home. Double-dipped in his regional blues style, Kingfish displays not only the influence of the three guitar Kings, but a passion for real-world blues. He’s the […]

The Routes

In This Perfect Hell

Think old-school Zombies crossed with new-thing Arctic Monkeys: the result may just be the Routes. The guitar-bass-drum trio is part classic Brit invasion rockers with period-perfect gear, part hypnotic proto psychedelia – yet with a harder-core modern edge to their sound. Guitarman Chris Jack fronts the band, armed with an arsenal of Selmer amps and […]

Simon McBride

Purple’s Picker

Though he replaced Steve Morse two years ago, Belfast native Simon McBride is still Deep Purple’s “new” guitarist. The band’s latest album, =1, is his first with the hard-rock legends. Did songwriting for =1 work differently when you joined? The format was pretty much the same as when they worked with Steve. We had three […]
