    “Have Guitar Will Travel” host James Patrick Regan speaks with multi-instrumentalist Luis Carlos Maldonado. Growing up in Arizona and SoCal, he took to guitar after being turned on to progressive rock by U.K. and King Crimson and encouraged by his brother, Train bassist Hector Maldonado. Like most professionals, he’s been through a lot of gear and has great stories fostered by an array of band gigs (he has played with John Waite, Phil Mogg, Michael Schenker, Dean Delray, and now, Mick Jones in Foreigner) and a solo career that includes working with Mike Varney at Shrapnel Records.

    Steve Conte

    “Have Guitar Will Travel” episode 65 features host James Patrick Regan speaking with guitarist/vocalist Steve Conte. An educated jazzer and proficient solo artist, for his new album, “Bronx Cheer,” Conte teamed with fellow guitarist Chris Spedding and drummer Charlie Drayton. Conte himself started on drums as a kid, but jumped to guitar and has backed Paul Simon, Billy Squire, Willie DeVille, Peter Wolf, and the New York Dolls both with original frontman David Johansson, and now, with Michael Monroe. For more than 20 years, he has also sung and played music for the sci-fi series/movie “Cowboy Bebop” and other animé programs. Always a gearhead, they talk about the instruments and amps that have accompanied him throughout his career.

When he joined Bruno’s band, he had to transition from dedicated keyboardist to also handling guitar, and eventually guiding the whole band.

    Bonnie Hayes

    Bonnie Hayes is a guitarist, songwriter, and head of the songwriting department at Berklee College. Bonnie grew up in a very musical family and two of her brothers are players who’ve backed superstars. She has written tunes recorded by Cher, Bette Midler, Bonnie Raitt, Natalie Cole, Robert Cray, David Crosby, Adam Ant, and Booker T and the MGs while also releasing her own albums. She and James discuss her love of jazz and punk, and how a trip to New York opened her eyes to the realities of the music industry. They also touch on her band opening for Muddy Waters and Bob Seger, seeing the Sex Pistols at their first U.S. gig, and much more.

    Guitarist, composer and producer Mark Goldenberg, has studied with Ted Greene and backed icons including Linda Ronstadt, Peter Frampton, Ringo Starr, Jackson Browne, Al Stewart, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, and many others.     Shane Theriot

    Shane Theriot is the musical director and guitarist for Hall and Oates and the internet program “Live from Daryl’s House.” Theriot grew up just outside New Orleans and spent eight years as guitarist for the Neville Brothers. After moving to Nashville he landed a gig with Slim Whitman, followed by Harold Bradley (in England). He digs deep into the philosophy that has made Shrapnel so successful under his guidance, explains why he’s so fond of Gibson and Epiphone guitars, and gets into his recent work with Gravity Amplifiers.

    Richard Fortus, longtime guitarist with Guns and Roses, joins host James Patrick Regan in the new episode of “Have Guitar Will Travel.” Richard talks about growing up in St. Louis, where he studied violin and classical guitar at the Conservatory of the Arts, and saw many of his guitar heroes perform. In high school, he joined a band that signed a record deal and toured with the Psychedelic Furs – which he later joined. Karl holds bachelor’s degree in Jazz Guitar from the University of Northern Colorado, and works as a performing and recording artist, producer, and educator in New York.
