Scott Henderson

The latest from Scott Henderson brings more of what we’ve come to expect from the Stratmaster – his usual liquid tone, great chops, and masterful writing are all on full display.

Henderson showcases his unique sound starting with the opener, “Church Of Xotic Dance.” The song introduces the listener to his use of slinky sound, dynamics, and surprising shifts in mood. In fact, like a couple tunes here, the song is almost written in movements. You get the clever melody and great soloing before things slow down and get quiet. From there it’s back to fusion heaven and some great playing.

Henderson never falters, whether it’s the clean funk and wonderfully created melodies of the title cut or the lovely lightness of “Festival Of Ghosts,” which somehow mixes the rough and the quiet together without any jarring juxtaposition.
Bassist Travis Carlton and drummer Alan Hertz are perfect foils for whatever Henderson throws at them. Henderson’s playing and compositions call for a band that is lockstep with the artist, and the rhythm section is right on the money.
