Mike Powers, Instrument Designer, Passes

Peavey instrument designer Mike Powers passes

Mike Powers, a veteran designer for Peavey stringed instruments, passed away April 29. A longtime Peavey employee, he was involved in the creation of the T-20 bass. He spent several years in China, setting up Peavey’s manufacturing system in that country. Powers was profiled in VG’s December ’11 issue.

I am saddened to hear that Mike Powers passed away. I used to sell wood finishing products to him when he worked in a music store in Lansing, Illinois. That’s going back to the late ’70s and/or early ’80s. During that time, Mike built a bass for me, the body of which is walnut. I’ve never seen another like it, but I suppose they exist. A few years ago, I sent him a picture of my guitar to see if he remembered building it and to show him that I’ve taken great care of it. He did remember it. Today, while I was tuning my guitar, I decided to contact him just to chat. I’m sad that chat won’t happen.
