Jon Lord’s contributions to Deep Purple were HUGE, but always overshadowed by the bigger ego of Ritchie Blackmore and the higher visibility of frontman Ian Gillan. Besides his songwriting, much of what is perceived as guitar power-chords in songs like Smoke on the Water, is actually Jon’s Hammond organ grinding away through a Marshall guitar amp, with a sound that he called the Beast.
