Australian fingerstyle guitarist Tommy Emmanuel and British jazzer Martin Taylor will release an album of duets, The Colonel & The Governor, May 14. The disc recreates jazz classics from Django Reinhardt, Carl Kress, and Eddie Lang, including standards like “Jersey Bounce,” “The Nearness of You,” and “Lullaby of Birdland” are presented in arrangements that allow them to, as Emmanuel says, “fly their own our kites.”
“It was a fun and challenging record to make,” he added. “It’s honest and in-your-face playing. Martin swings like a member of the Basie Big Band and phrases like a pioneer of jazz.”
Recording the album, Taylor played his signature Maestro, while Emmanuel played his 1930 Martin 0-17, his Godin 5th Avenue, and his Maton custom EGB808.
