Jeff Beck Receives Montreal Guitar Show Tribute Award

Posted on 6/25/2009

Organizers of The Montreal Guitar Show this year created a Tribute Award to spotlight outstanding guitarists. To launch the fledgling Guitar Hall of Fame, they selected Jeff Beck to be the first person to receive award.

Beck was born in 1944 and in '65 he joined the Yardbirds, replacing Eric Clapton. Two years later left to form The Jeff Beck Group, with Ron Wood on bass and a certain Rod Stewart on vocalsŠand two albums, Truth (1968) and Beck-Ola (1969), both classics with rock fans. Changing bands, he came out with the album Rough and Ready in 1971, and following that, each a year apart, The Jeff Beck Group and Beck, Bogert and Appice. Beck then broke suddenly with the rocker guitarist image, giving himself over to jazz fusion with Blow by Blow (1975) and Wired (1976). And a smart idea it was: the two albums were acclaimed by both the public and the critics, and figured among the top-selling albums of their era.

The Tribute Award is devoted to the guitar and everything related to it: the instrument, its fans, luthiers who give it life, and players. THe trophy was designed by Michihiro Matsuda, a guitar maker and artist who studied with luthier Ervin Somogyi.
