As with all boutique, hand made guitars a little background on the luthier is in order... Performance Guitars was started in Hollywood, CA in 1976 by former Fender and Yamaha builder and technician Kunio Sugai. Having a shop across the street from Capital Records recording studios has helped him build an impressive client base over the years. He was the personal guitar tech for Frank Zappa. Before he endorsed Ibanez and developed the Jem, nearly all of Steve Vai's guitars were Performance Guitars. They built the original guitar for Warren DeMartini upon which his later Charvel signature series is based. The original Snakeskin and Skull guitars were built by Performance. They also built guitars for Joe Walsh and a host of other famous guitar heroes like Michael Schenker, Ritchie Kotzen, Paul Gilbert, Doug Aldridge, Tom Morello, etc..
Body is TWO PIECES of SOLID quarter sawn maple. Finish is nitro. Pickups are HOT Custom Hand-wound Bensons. Every cavity - including the pickup and electronics cavities - is shielded with thick sheets of copper shielding, not the thin, flimsy shielding tape.
