Summers, Delaney & Sharp – Tonight Only

Tonight Only

One good thing to emerge from the recently deceased swing “renaissance” was the collective desire by many 20 and 30-something aficionados to find out from whence this music came. It’s one thing to cop Jennings and Casey licks, but truly another to reference those players’ mentors – Django Reinhardt and Oscar A’leman.

This Ann Arbor-based trio is a swing treasure that insures those that want to know will receive history lessons aplenty.

Vintage guitar enthusiast and player extraordinaire Joe Summers has been a musical role model for some 20 years. An incredibly diverse fretted instrument specialist, Summers is an enigma in the Motor City. Whether it was the Soup Kitchen, the current Greek Town venues, or the old Twenty Grande, Summers’ licks have nourished a pair of generations of six, eight, or 12-string wannabes. He’s devoted his life to the instruments, and if it has frets, he will abide.

Regardless of the author, the 10 songs on this CD are presented in a time vacuum that will transport you to whichever locale is represented. Be it the Hot Cub, 52nd St., or Lang or Durham, Summers, Delaney & Sharp’s attention to sonic detail, recorded live without a net, is in the pocket. Available From Joe Summers, 1705 N. Huron River Dr., Ypsilanti, MI 48197.
